October 2026 Individual Tax Deadlines

October brings a critical set of tax deadlines for individuals, particularly those who requested filing extensions earlier in the year. If you deferred your 2025 individual income tax return or foreign financial account reporting, the extended due dates arrive this month. Additionally, individuals earning tip income have mandatory reporting requirements to manage.

Tax and financial statistics

October 13: Report Tips to Employer

If you work for tips and accumulated more than $20 in tip income during September, you must formally report that amount to your employer no later than October 13. You can submit this information using IRS Form 4070 or by providing a custom written statement. If you create your own statement, it must include your signature; name, address, and Social Security number; employer’s name (or the establishment’s name, if different) and address; the month or period the report covers; and the total tips received during that timeframe.

Once reported, your employer is legally required to withhold FICA taxes and standard income tax from your regular wages to cover those tips. If your standard paycheck is insufficient to cover the required FICA and tax withholding, your employer will report the uncollected amount in box 8 of your W-2 at year-end. You will then be responsible for paying that uncollected withholding when you file your annual tax return.

October 15: Individual Income Tax Returns

For taxpayers who requested an automatic six-month extension to file their 2025 income tax return, the deadline has arrived. You must file Form 1040 by October 15 and pay any outstanding tax, along with accrued interest and penalties.

October 15: Foreign Financial Interests

If you hold foreign financial accounts and received an automatic six-month extension from the Department of the Treasury to report them for 2025, October 15 is also your final due date for filing Form FinCEN 114.

Weekends and Holidays

As a general rule, if any tax due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline is automatically extended to the next business day that is not itself a legal holiday.

Disaster Area Extensions

The IRS frequently grants extended filing deadlines for taxpayers living or operating in designated disaster areas. To verify if your specific location in North Carolina or elsewhere qualifies as a designated disaster area and to check for adjusted extension dates, visit the following resources:
